The Intergovernmental Group of Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) is organizing from 29 to 30 August 2012 in Praia, Cape Verde, a sensitization workshop for journalists from Francophone and Lusophone ECOWAS.
The objectives of the workshop are to strengthen the capacity of journalists and reporters on economic and financial crimes as well as informing them about the mandate and progress GIABA stands in this crusade.
It is also designed to encourage the participants continue in the area of research, particularly in the fight against money laundering and financing of terrorism (AML / CFT).
The seminar also aims at building an alliance with the media for a wide and effective dissemination of issues of AML / CFT, broaden and energize the network of journalists to promote the diffusion of messages in West Africa.
It is also meant to maximize awareness of the deleterious effects of money laundering, GIABA broadened base of stakeholders and included the average.
The latter play a crucial role in promoting good governance and ensure that corrupt practices are known.
Therefore, the importance of the media in disseminating messages AML / CFT can not be underestimated. It is in recognition of this role that GIABA in its Strategic Plan 2011-2014 also decided to establish a strategic partnership with the media.
A Communication Strategy adopted at the 11th Ministerial Meeting of the Committee, in Abidjan in May 2012, made it cear that the media are at the forefront of disseminating messages and mobilization of populations hence their participation in this crusade.
We are all aware that the media are a powerful ally to achieve its status as a leader in assisting member states to protect their economies. GIABA organizes awareness programs / training for journalists on their role in the promotion and implementation of a system AML / CFT effectively.
A collaboration with the fourth power in the fight against these scourges is based on maximizing the potential of the media face the challenges of AML / CFT, the appropriation of a holistic media in fulfilling the mandate of GIABA, and on the credibility and legitimacy of its message.
At the end of the seminar, it is expected of the participants, the production of articles on the revised FATF 40 Recommendations, increasing the number of qualified journalists with a deep understanding of economic and financial crimes; improving knowledge about the techniques of BC; continued awareness about the negative effects of ML / FT, etc.
